The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz is a true story about seven men who escape a Soviet labor camp in the upper regions of Siberia during WW II and walk to freedom, 4,000 miles away. Their year long trek takes them through Russia, China,Tibet, until they finally reach their destination, in India.  They encounter brutal winter weather in Siberia, the heat of the Gobi Desert and the perils of the Himalayas in this story of survival told in riviting first hand detail by the late Mr. Rawicz.

Some of the men make it to India, some don't; but the story reminds us all about the incrediable will that humans have for survival, even under the most harsh conditions.  In January, a movie version of the book will be released.  The movie is titled, The Way Back.  If the movie is half as good as the book it will be a winner!
