If you are interested in history and in a land that seems so distance - but in reality not at all that very far away - then The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnston (www.waynejohnston.ca) is a novel that you will want to read. Johnson chronicles the life of Joey Smallwood, the first premier of Newfoundland. The reader is provided with a remarkable history of the island before and after it became a province of Canada in 1949. It is a novel about the hard and impoverished life of those in Newfoundland at the turn of the 20th century. It is a love story. It is political drama. It is so many things to a reader that it leaves one with a multitude of emotions as you journey through this book. But most of all it is a book that is brilliantly written by a truly gifted writer. |
