Have you ever tried parachuting? The sound of the rushing air as you fall at speeds close to 120 mph is deafening. Your eyes are focus on whats below--an expansive piece of earth where you have incredible views; and, of course, on your altimeter which tells you the precise height you are above the earth. And then you pull your chute and there is this eerie silence as you gently float down to earth.
It is never too late to try parachuting. Starting out many try a tandem jump where you are attached to an instructor who makes sure you fall in a controlled manner. After about 20 minutes of instruction a beginner is taken up to 10,500 feet and then you jump attached to an instructor.
Most states have skydiving centers that offer lessons for beginners and experienced jumpers, but a word of caution, parachuting can be expensive. According to several web sites a single tandem jump is approximately $230. But if you look upon it as a thrill of a lifetime it may be worth the cost to you. |
