Many seniors enjoy wine and if you are one of those seniors then try making your own. However, start learning about winemaking now before the grapes are harvested, usually in the fall.
Two books, From Vines to Wines by Jeff Cox and The Way to Make Wine by Sheridan Warrick are must reads and give you all the knowledge you will need for making wine at home.
Because grapes sell out quickly at vineyards you’ll have to order early at the beginning of summer. Check the internet and call local vineyards to see if they have grapes. The first time out you may wish to purchase grape concentrate which can be obtained at local winemaking stores or at stores that are on the internet. This will give you an opportunity to learn without having to stem and crush the grapes which needs extra equipment. Using a concentrate the first time out usually will produce good wine but also you’ll gain important knowledge and boost your confidence for the more complicated process when you purchase, stem, and crush grapes.
Equipment and supplies for beginners will usually cost about $125. Good grape concentrate will cost between $75 and $95. You can purchase beginner winemaking kits and concentrate at a store in Vermont or online.
So, who knows, you may be that next person who serves another great homemade wine.
